• Start your search immediately; don't wait for your dog to return on his own. Stray dogs are required to be held for only 48 hours before they can be put up for adoption or euthanized. There is no required holding period for cats! Don't wait!
  • Contact all shelters and animal control organizations - not just once, but continually.
  • Visit shelters in person as often as possible. The person you speak to on the phone might not know if your dog is there.
  • Be sure to ask shelter personnel where strays are held, since new arrivals will not be in the adoption areas.
  • Post fliers and ads everywhere.
  • Ask the kids in your neighborhood.
  • Offer a reward.
  • Don't give up your search too soon!
